God Uses the Ordinary
Why God Often Uses What We Overlook
Have you ever looked at what you have and thought, “This doesn’t feel like enough”?
We’ve all been there.
We look at our resources, our gifts, our background, even our past—and we wonder how God could possibly use something so ordinary to do something significant.
But Scripture tells us something powerful: God uses the ordinary in life-changing ways when we place what we have into His hands.
How God Uses Ordinary People for Extraordinary Purposes
Throughout the Bible, God doesn’t start with what’s impressive. He starts with what’s available.
- A shepherd boy with a sling.
- A widow with a jar of oil.
- Five loaves and two fish.
- A wooden staff.
- A group of fishermen.
None of it looked extraordinary on its own. But once it was placed in God’s hands, everything changed.
We often say, “God, if I had more, I would do more.” But God responds, “If you give Me what you have, I’ll show you what I can do.”
Zechariah 4:10 (NIV) reminds us:
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”
Notice that—the Lord rejoices at the beginning, not just the breakthrough.
We tend to overlook small starts. God celebrates them.
What we call ordinary, God calls seed.
What we call small, God calls potential.
What we call insignificant, God calls usable.
That’s why we create reminders for everyday faith—tools that help us stay anchored in obedience, purpose, and hope in the middle of real life.

Time and again, miracles didn’t happen because someone had everything figured out. They happened because someone was willing to obey.
- Moses raised the staff.
- The disciples handed over the lunch.
- Elijah went where God told him to go.
- Peter cast the net again.
Obedience activated the ordinary.
And here’s something we can’t miss—what God does through us is rarely just for us. Elijah’s obedience sustained a widow’s family. The loaves fed a crowd. The fishermen became the foundation of the Church.
So today, the question isn’t “Is this enough?” The question is “Will we trust God with what’s already in our hands?”
God has never needed perfect people. He has always used willing ones.
Sometimes we need a practical reminder we can wear, carry, or come back to daily—something that keeps our faith in front of us when life feels ordinary.

Reflection
What might God want to use in our life right now—something we’ve been overlooking or undervaluing?
Take a moment. Offer it to Him. And trust that when God touches the ordinary, it never stays ordinary.
